Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the global economy, and Africa is positioning itself as a leader in this digital transformation. Today marks a significant milestone in that journey: the AI Skills and Compute Africa Foundation (AISCA) and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build and scale Africa’s sovereign AI ecosystem.

Signed by AIMS Network President, Prof. Sam Yala, and AISCA CEO, Isobel Acquah, this strategic partnership bridges the gap between high-level mathematical research and real-world technological deployment.

Bridging Research, Infrastructure, and Opportunity

While talent is evenly distributed across the African continent, access to critical compute infrastructure and structured career pathways often is not. This collaboration directly addresses those bottlenecks by combining AISCA’s compute capacity and deployment infrastructure with AIMS’s pan-African academic network.

Key Pillars of the Partnership

• High-Performance Compute Access: Sourced researchers will gain node-hour compute grants and access to the AISCA Studio environment to test, package, and deploy AI models.
• Co-Designed Curriculum: AIMS and AISCA will commission a joint needs assessment to co-design advanced High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI learning modules for a broad cohort of African innovators.
• Research-to-Deployment Pathways: Working through AIMS’s Knowledge & Technology Transfer (KTT) initiative and local incubators, the partnership will help turn fundamental and applied research into market-ready ventures.
• Physical Hubs & Community: The organizations are exploring campus-anchored AISCA Studios to serve as local innovation hubs across AIMS sites.

Driving Gender-Inclusive Innovation

A central commitment of this partnership is driving gender equity in the deep-tech sector. AISCA and AIMS have mandated that at least 60% of all supported beneficiaries will be young women. By prioritizing access for marginalized communities and women researchers, the initiative ensures that the architects of Africa’s AI future represent the full diversity of the continent.

A Continental Vision

With a goal of supporting at least 1,000 researchers over the next five years, the initiative leverages AIMS’s footprint across all 54 African countries. Through joint public engagement campaigns like STEM Championsand Compute Champions, alongside positioning at major continental forums like African Science Week, AISCA and AIMS are establishing clear pathways to dignified, high-impact tech careers.

By combining resources, infrastructure, and academic excellence, this partnership ensures African innovators have the toolkits required not just to participate in the global AI economy, but to lead it.
