AIMS Partners with RRA

An MoU to Establish a Framework for Collaboration Between the two organizations.

On June 11, 2024, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA). This agreement aims to enhance collaboration, with a focus on utilizing mathematical sciences to create innovative tools to improve RRA’s efficiency, productivity, and quality of service.

The Rwanda Revenue Authority, established in 1997, is responsible for assessing, collecting, and accounting for tax, customs, and other specified revenues in Rwanda. It also has the mandate to collect non-tax revenues.

The alliance between RRA and AIMS took root in 2017, with RRA offering internship opportunities to AIMS students as a primary engagement. Building upon this relationship, the new commitments involve AIMS playing a significant role in the professional growth of RRA staff. This will be facilitated through short and long-term courses, inclusive of training programs, and opportunities for Master’s and PhD studies, as per the request of RRA Management.

These initiatives are designed to cultivate a competent workforce to aid RRA’s transition towards digital transformation and data-driven operations. As per the MoU, both institutions will work together on Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities to enhance Customs and Tax Administration systems and cater to RRA’s unique requirements.

Their joint efforts will concentrate on capacity building in various areas such as tax modelling, financial mathematics, big data analytics, AI and machine learning, dashboard development, and computer security.

Furthermore, RRA will assign experts to instruct AIMS students about the significance of mathematical sciences in Customs and Tax Administration and oversee the execution of national, regional, and global Tax Administration development programs.
