Gladys Muthoni Kamau

Kenya

Co-op Master’s Class of 2019/2021

Not all skills are taught in class, there is more to learn on field, especially during the internship programs. “I did not learn all the skills required to achieve the project goals in class”, says Gladys. “My internship enabled me to enhance my knowledge and skills in data science.” Use of dashboards to display analytics was Gladys’ idea that KCB accepted and asked her to implement.

Working in a team of two, Gladys developed dashboards and performed financial analyses relying heavily on her grasp of programming, communication and collaboration skills. Interactions, good communication with her teammate and other colleagues helped obtain the required information and contributed to the success of the assignment meeting deadlines and performing analyses competently. The KCB management accorded Gladys the right guidance, support, supervision and tools to perform her assignment successfully. Together with her flexible supervisor, Gladys set achievable objectives with deadlines which she fully met. Working at KCB was enjoyable for Gladys, she also feels that the experience was educative and deepened her interest in machine learning “In fact it increased my urge to learn more about machine learning”. She felt that AIMS Rwanda ought to add more courses in its offerings, “Data science courses should be added to expound on what is covered”. A parting advice Gladys has to Interns is that they be open minded, self-teach themselves to enrich their knowledge over what they learned in class. She plans to continue working with KCB Rwanda Plc.

Gladys Muthoni Kamau is an Alumna of the AIMS Rwanda Centre, class 2019/2021 of the AIMS MSc. in Mathematical Sciences, Mastercard Scholars program, the Cooperative Program. Gladys opted for the Co-op trajectory focusing on its 6-months internship track. The desire to apply theoretical knowledge practically was too alluring to her. “This motivated me because it created a transition from the classroom environment to industry which allowed me to implement and increase my knowledge and skills of what I had learnt in class”. She was at the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Rwanda Plc, Customer Experience Department for six months purposely to practice theoretical knowledge gained in college and grow new professional networks in the corporate world.
